New Street Trend: Grown Up Kids Lately on the streets from Paris to New York to Los Angeles we have been seeing more of adults dressing like little kids and I think this style is here to stay with bright colors, bows, ruffle and lots of layers. __________ __________ Paris Street Style Fall 2008 _____ Pollini ______ Spring 2009 RTW This look is all about kids with the mix of colors, polka dots and the high bun. _ John Galliano Spring 2009 RTW _ __ ______ Pink and orange with ruffles, big jewelry and big bows screams I am playing dress up in my mom's clothes.

New Street Trend: Exercise Chic

Exercise chic is a new street trend that has recently emerged from people's love of comfortable workout wear that they mix with other pieces to create unusual and funky outfits. ____________________ Paris April 2009 Exercise leggings get a whole new look with this multi-layered outfit. _ Marc by Marc Jacobs Spring 2009 A weight lifting belt, sporty jacket and sneakers inspire you to exercise during the day. ___ Alexander Wang Spring 2009 RTW The model for this runway look isn't sure if she should head to work, the gym or just to hang out with her friends.

Punk

Punk fashion was started as an aggressive movement by the anti-fashion youth in the late 1970's. The fashion included torn clothes, chains, body piercings, tattoos, outrageous hairstyles such as Mohawks, metal studs, tight jeans and over sized t-shirts. Punk Carnaby Street London, England 1982 Balmain Fall 2008 RTW - Paris. This runway look is inspired by the punk fashion with the over sized t-shirt, skinny pants with snake embellishment and the boots.
Luella Fall 2009 RTW The punk influences in this outfit are the deconstructed top, the shiny disks on the dress and the Mohawk hairstyle.

Hip Hop

Hip Hop fashion began in the U.S. in the early 1980's. The fashion included tracksuits, matching clothing, bomber jackets, sneakers especially Adidas shoes, and large gold jewelry. ______________ Run D.M.C. (original hip hop group) 1983 ___ Y-3 Fall 2003 RTW _____________ This look displays the hip hop fashion with the puffer jacket, plain t-shirt, baggy pants and cool sneakers. All of the elements were seen over and over in the hip hop fashion. ______ Lacoste Fall 2006 RTW __________ This runway look shows the hip hop fashion with the bomber jacket in purple leather with the matching pants and hat. The hip hop fashions of the 80's included a lot of matching sets.

Disco

Disco fashion began in the 1970's and incorporated many things including, mini dresses, maxi dresses, catsuits, evening trousers, hot pants and platform shoes. The clothing was made out of synthetic colorful materials. The 1970's were an era focused on disco dancing and partying and the clothing allowed for wearers to have fun and live the disco life. __________________ ___ ______ Disco John Travolta -- Saturday Night Fever 1977 Gucci Resort 2009 This runway look is a great mini dress in a bright color with the big shades reminiscent of the disco era. __ Halston Fall 2009 RTW This catsuit looks as if it was transplanted from straight from the disco era and just done in a new fabric. This look would have been perfect for dancing the night away.

Hippies

Hippie Fashion began in the 1960's in the U.S. as a protest against war and establishment. The hippie fashions included sandals, long dresses and skirts, tie-dyed shirts, bell-bottoms, peasant blouses, head scarves and long hair. Hippies 1960's USA ___________ Diane Von Furstenberg Spring 2009 RTW This runway look shows hippie influences with the long, flowing printed dress and the accompanying braided headband with a flower. ___ Ossie Clark Fall 2009 RTW London This look shows hippie influences with the long printed dress that does not show much of the shape of the body and the simple hair with the part down the middle.

Mods

Mod fashion began in the 1960's in England. The fashion focused on bright bold colors and geometric fashion for both women and men. 1960's mod fashion England Proenza Schouler Fall 2005 RTW The mod influence is visible in this look with the geometric pattern in bold colors on a short dress.
Missoni

This runway look is mod with the bright yellow color and mini skirt with the black tights. This look is very Twiggy look, that was famous during the mod fashion period.

Beatniks

Beatnik fashion started in San Francisco and was anti-materialistic movement for intellectuals and artists. For women the fashion included black turtlenecks, black stockings, ballet flats, wearing sunglasses inside and skinny black pants. For men the fashion included simple monochromatic clothing with berets and goatees. Beatnik Bob Donlin, Neal Cassady, Allen Ginsberg, Robert LaVigne, and Lawrence Ferlinghetti 1940's

Teddy Boys

Teddy Boys fashion consisted of a more elegant fashion rather than the ultra functional clothing of their parents generation. The look included a long single breasted jacket with narrow contrasting lapels and lots of pockets. This was paired with narrow trousers, stiff shirts and slim ties. ____________________________________ ___ Teddy Boys Manchester, England 1955 __ Givenchy Spring 2001 RTW This runway look shows inspiration from the Teddy Boys fashion with the slim satin bow at the neck, the long jacket and stiff shirt. The look is a feminie version of the original. _____ House of Holland Fall 2008 RTW London This suit is reminiscent of the original Teddy Boy look with the contrasting details of the buckles instead of the original pocket details. It also has the narrow trousers of the Teddy Boy look. This look to me is a mix of the Teddy Boy look and the traditional Scottish dress.

Zoot Suits

Zoot Suits were originally worn by Latino and African American youth in Chicago and Los Angeles. The suits consisted of a long coat with wide lapels and padded shoulders with high-waisted, wide legged pegged trousers. The zoot suit is well known for the Zoot Suit Riots in Los Angeles in 1943, which involved Latino youth and sailors. Eventually the zoot suit was fazed out due to the WWII textile restrictions.

This suit is reminiscent of the Zoot Suit with the pegged leg pants and a hat similar to those worn during this time period.
